Virtues and meaning of the 6 kalima
The ruling of observing these 6 Kalimas
There is nothing in these 6 Kalimas to denounce, rather it is true speech. 6 Kalimas are in agreement with what the true belief of Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah is based on.
Observing these certain 6 Kalimas does not contradict Islamic law, and it does not contain any wrong. For 6 Kalimas are from the core of the Islamic religion and belief, however, they have not been mentioned in any Islamic text that collects all of them.
6 Kalimas were taken from various Islamic texts. Collecting and grouping them in such a way is approved as long as it goes with the core religion. It is considered like writing Islamic books.
In this article, we will briefly review these 6 Kalimas with an explanation. We would see to which extent 6 Kalimas are in agreement with the Islamic Sharia.
the 6 kalima in Arabic, English, and Urdu meaning, translation, and transliterations
1st kalma: “al-Kalma al-Taiyba”
The 1st Kalma (the good word): It is the word of monotheism “there is no god but Allah”. Allah, Glory be to Him, named the word of Tawheed as the good word according to the saying of the majority of commentators of the Quran.
He, the all-Mighty, likened it to a good tree that has a firm origin and its branches are high in the sky. The good tree continues to provide fruits all the time.
Allah, Almighty says {Have you not considered how Allah presents an example, [making] a good word like a good tree, whose root is firmly fixed and its branches [high] in the sky?}
This tree is like the tree of monotheism, which is firmly established in the hearts, and whose branches of righteous deeds are raised to the heavens.
1st Kalma “there is no true god but Allah” is an acknowledgment of Allah’s deserving of worship alone, and the denial of partners with Him.
This word “1st Kalma” saves that one who believes in it from the Fire and from the punishment on the Day of Resurrection. Whoever acts according to it, will have happiness in this world and the Hereafter.
Muslims would accept those who say 1st Kalma even falsely. Muslims cannot fight against them, and their money is preserved, however, their accounting is with Allah.
1st Kalma has great and many virtues including:
Anas said that the Prophet used to attack the enemy at dawn, and he would sometimes hear the adhan, so if he heard an adhan he stopped, but otherwise, he attacked. Once on hearing a man say, “God is most great, God is most great,” God’s Messenger said, “You follow Islam.” Then hearing him say, “There is no god but God,” he said, “You have come forth from hell.” They looked at him and found that he was a goatherd.
Abu Huraira reported God’s messenger as saying that no one will ever say sincerely, “There is no god but God” without the gates of heaven being opened for it so that it may come to the Throne, as long as he avoids major sins.
2nd Kalma
The 2nd Kalma is al-Shahada: It is to bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. 2nd Kalma is the first pillar of Islam and the key to it.
The meaning of the first part of 2nd Klama is to believe in Allah by heart, to say it by the tongue, and to act according to that belief by lambs. 2nd Kalma necessitates that Muslims should trust, fear, and observe Allah alone. Muslim believe that Allah is the actual power behind everything, and nothing happens except after His permission. Allah is the only Creator of the universe and the One who controls it.
The meaning of the second part of 2nd Kalma is that “Prophet Mohammed is the Messenger of Allah.” It means that one believes that the Prophet Muhammad – Pbuh- was sent by Allah as a mercy to the world. He was sent to give glad tidings and warns.
This part of the 2nd Kalma means also to believe that Prophet Mohammed’s law abrogates what preceded it from the previous laws. It also requires the acceptance of all that he conveys and obeying all his orders. One should worship Allah as the prophet Mohammed taught him.

3rd Kalma
3rd Kalma At-Tamjweed: It is saying “Glory be to Allah, praise be to Allah, there is no god but Allah, Allah is the Greatest, and there is no might nor power except with God, the Exalted, the Great.”
Many virtues of these noble words have been reported. 3rd Kalma has a great reward and generous gifts, which indicates its greatness, honor before Allah.
3rd Kalma, as some scholars see it, includes the meanings of many types of remembrance of Allah. It includes Tawheed and the Exaltation of Allah as well as many types of Allah’s Praise. It also refers to Allah’s Names. Thus, 3rd Kalma has a high rank and position in Islam.
On the authority of Abu Hurairah – may Allah be pleased with him – that the Messenger of Allah, Pbuh, said: “to say Glory be to God; Praise is to God; there is no god but Allah, and God is most great, is dearer to me than everything on which the sun rises.”
3rd Kalma means to make “Tamjeed”, which means to praise Allah, by mentioning some of His Most Beautiful Names and Most High Attributes. As well as acknowledging your submission and need to Him.
4th Kalma
The 4th Kalma is the Monotheism, which is saying:
None has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, Who has no partner. To Him belongs the dominion and to Him is the praise. He brings life and He causes death. In His Hand is all good, and He is Able to do all things.
Some Hadiths explaining the verities of the 4th Kalma:
- Virtues of the 4th Kalma
Prophet Mohammed -Pbup- said: “The most excellent dua is the dua on the Day of Arafa, and the best of what I and the prophets before me have said, is ‘There is no god but Allah, alone, without partner. He brings life and He causes death. He is able to do all things“
- Virtues of the 4th Kalma
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Whoever says at the end of every Fajr prayer, while his feet are still folded, before speaking: ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, Alone without partner, to Him belongs all that exists, and to Him is the praise, He gives life and causes death, and He is powerful over all things, (Lā ilāha illallāh, waḥdahu lā sharīka lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-ḥamdu, yuḥyī wa yumītu, wa huwa `alā kulli shay’in qadīr)’ ten times, then ten good deeds shall be written for him, ten evil deeds shall be wiped away from him, ten degrees shall be raised up for him, and he shall be in security all that day from every disliked thing, and he shall be in protection from Shaitan, and no sin will meet him or destroy him that day, except for associating partners with Allah.”
- Virtues of the 4th Kalma
Abu ‘Ayyash reported God’s messenger as saying that “if anyone says in the morning, “There is no god but God alone who has no partner; to Him belongs the dominion, to Him praise is due, and He is omnipotent,” he will have a reward equivalent to that for setting free a slave from among the descendants of Ishmael, will have ten good deeds recorded for him, will have ten evil deeds deducted from him, will be advanced ten degrees, and will be guarded from the devil till the evening. If he says them in the evening he will have a similar recompense till the morning. Hammad b. Salama said that a man saw God’s messenger in a dream and said, “Messenger of God, Abu ‘Ayyash is relating such and such on your authority,” to which he received the reply, “Abu ‘Ayyash has spoken the truth.”
- Virtues of the 4th Kalma
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “He who utters a hundred times in a day these words: ‘La ilaha illallahu, wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu, wa Huwa ‘ala kulli sha’in Qadir (there is no true god except Allah. He is One and He has no partner with Him; His is the sovereignty and His is the praise, and He is Omnipotent),’ he will have a reward equivalent to that for emancipating ten slaves, a hundred good deeds will be recorded to his credit, hundred of his sins will be blotted out from his scroll, and he will be safeguarded against the devil on that day till the evening; and no one will exceed him in doing more excellent good deeds except someone who has recited these words more often than him. And he who utters: ‘Subhan-Allahi wa bihamdihi (Allah is free from imperfection and His is the praise)’ one hundred times a day, his sins will be obliterated even if they are equal to the extent of the foam of the ocean.” [Bukhari and Muslim]
5th Kalma
The 5th Kalma is for asking Allah for Forgiveness, which is saying: I ask forgiveness of Allah, my Lord, for every sin I committed intentionally or wrongly, secretly or openly. And I repent to Him from the sin that I know and from the sin that I do not know. You are the Knower of the unseen, the One who cover the mistakes, the Forgiver of sins, and there is no might or power except by Allah, the Most High, and the Most Great.
Istighfaar, which is the meaning of the 5th Kalma, means that the servant asks Allah for the forgiveness of his sins. 5th Kalma means as well asking Allah to conceal the stumbles, overlook the mistakes, and not be held accountable for them.
5th Kalma “Istighfaar” is the remedy for sins and their effects. On the authority of Al-Zubayr bin Al-Awwam – may God be pleased with him – said: The Messenger of Allah – Pbuh – said: “Whoever loves that his Record (in the day of Judgment) makes him happy, let him ask for forgiveness a lot.”
‘Abdallah b. Busr reported Allah’s Messenger as saying, “Blessed is he who finds a great amount of asking for pardon in his record.”
Seeking forgiveness, which is the meaning of 5th Kalma is the path of the prophets, that they acted upon and commanded their people.
Abu Hurairah said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying, “I swear by Allah that I seek Allah’s Pardon and turn to Him in repentance more than seventy times a day.“
6th Kalma
Rejecting Disbelief, which is saying: O Allah, I seek refuge with You from associating others with You while knowing. I seek Your forgiveness for that of which I do not know. I repented against that, I disavowed myself of disbelief, polytheism, lying, and sins, of them. I submit myself to You and believe in You. I say: there is no god but God, Muhammad is the Messenger of God.
The worst thing that a person can do ever is to associate others with Allah the Almighty. Allah says: {And it was already revealed to you and to those before you that if you should associate [anything] with Allah, your work would surely become worthless, and you would surely be among the losers.}
Narrated Abdul Allah bin Mas’ood, he said: I asked Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) “What is the biggest sin in the sight of Allah?” He said, “To set up rivals unto Allah though He alone created you.” I said, “In fact, that is a tremendous sin,” and added, “What next?” He said, “To kill your son being afraid that he may share your food with you.” I further asked, “What next?” He said, “To commit illegal sexual intercourse with the wife of your neighbor.”
When a Muslim hears the word “shirk” he thinks that he is away from his life. However, the reality is that a person can associate others with Allah in many forms. Such as giving people’s satisfaction priority over the satisfaction of his Creator, loving them, or fearing them, more than Allah. One may associate others with Allah while knowing, and while not knowing in most cases, it is a serious matter.
Maqil bin Yasar (ra) said that he came to the Prophet (ﷺ) with Abu Bakr (ra). He said, “O Abu Bakr, polytheism enters your people more quietly (secretly) than the movement of ants.” Abu Bakr asked, “Is there a kind of polytheism besides associating anything with Allah?” The Prophet (ﷺ) said,” By him who has my life in his power, polytheism is more concealed than the movement of ants. Shall I not teach you something which if you say will eliminate minor or major (polytheism)?” He then said, “Say `O Allah! I seek refuge in you lest I associate anything with you while I know it, and I seek your forgiveness for what I do not know.’”
Among the basic principles that the enemies of Islam seek to destroy is “Innocence from polytheism and its people.” It is one foundation of our religion, and without which one’s Islam is not valid.
I ask Allah to grant us pure monotheism and to make us firm on His religion until we meet Him.
In conclusion
6th Kalimas are words that indicate some of the most general and basic principles of Islam. It is recommended to repeat and refresh our hearts with their meaning.
