Madd Badal in Quran Tajweed
What is Madd Badal
The meaning of Madd Al-Badal in Arabic is that if two hamzas in the same word are followed by the second one with the letter Sukoon, the action of the first hamza is called Madd Badal to change the second Hamzah into the letter Madd.
The reason for this rule is the difficulty of saying when two hamzas (the second hamza has Sukoon) occur consecutively. After looking at the rules and their pronunciation, you may realize that you have been using these rules without realizing it since you started reading the Qur’an.
Also, the name Madd is derived from the fact that the letter Madd originally came from Hamza and was replaced or replaced by the letter Madd corresponding to Haraka in Hamza. Similarly, the word “آمن” that begins with Hamzah, which begins with the letter Madd, was originally composed of Fatha and Hamza and Sukun “آمن” and Hamza. Then, the second Hamzah is replaced by Alif corresponding to Fatah in the previous Hamzah.
Madd Badal examples:
Some Madd Al Badal examples from Quran include:
– (لِإِيلَافِ قُرَيْشٍ)
– (فكيف آسى على قوم كافرين)
– (قالوا أُوذينا من قبل أن تأتينا ومن بعد ما جئتنا)
This Rule of Madd Badal is used in the cases mentioned above, but scholars have revealed that the letter Madd is also used for other people where the letter Madd is part of the original structure of the word. It can be divided into four parts:
- One of the following is used in situations like continuing and pausing:
– (نَبُِّؤونِي بِعِلْمٍ إِن كُنتُمْ صَادِقِينَ)
- Used only when the reader continues to read as in the verse:
– (وَمَا تَشَاوُونَ إِلَّا ان يَشَاءَ اللَّهُ)
This is because if the reader stands on the word (تشاؤون), the Article will be an example of Madd A’rid Lil Sukoon.
- This is not used if the reader just misses but continues to read:
– (وجاءو أباهم عشاء يبكون)
Here, if the reader continues to read after the word “جاو”, This article invites him to extend the verse because the next word “اباحم” becomes Hamd Monfasil. However, it is said that there is Madd Badal in the word “جاءو” in case of standing.
- Used when the reader starts reading with:
– (اِْتُونِي بِكِتَابٍ مِّن قَبْلِ هَذَا)
How to Apply Madd Al Badal:
If there are two Hamzah in a word, the first has a vowel and the second has a Sukoon. The second Hamzah will convert from the vowel category of the first Hamzah to the letter Madd (for example, if the first hamza has a Dammah on it, the second Hamzah will be changed to (و), if the first hamza has a Kasrah, the second Hamzah will be changed to (ي) and if the first hamza has a Fathah on it, the second Hamzah will be changed to (ا).
Example of Madd Badal:
وَأُوتِينَا ⇨ (WaOoteena)
وَا۪يتَٓائِ ⇨ (Eeetaae)
The Madd Badal example above shows that the Sukoon hamza (in the part shown in orange) changes the previous hamza to the Haraka form of the Madd to make it easier to read the Book of God.
Example of Madd Badal in Qur’an:
وَأُوتِينَا ⇨ wa ooteenaa
وَا۪يتَٓائِ ⇨ wa eetaae
An example of وَأُوتِينَا is in verse 16 of Surat An-Naml , and an example of وَايتَٓائِ is in verse 90 of Surat An Nahl. This is our letter transliterated and transliterated twice.
Previous example order:
وَأُوتِينَا ⇨ wa ooteenaa
وَايتَٓائِ ⇨ wa eetaae
When not to Apply Madd Badal:
To better understand the given example and rule, let’s look at an example where this rule does not apply. In the Qur’an the word أَيْمَانَهُمْ does not have Madd Badal and the pronunciation is Aymaanahum.
As you can see in the previous example, Madd Yaa is preceded by letter Hamzah singed by Fatha. so there no Madd Badal because hamza should be signed by Kasra.
The use of the Madd Badal depends on the specific situation. First, the first leter must be Hamzah. Second, the second letter must be one of: Hamzah (ء), alif (ا), wow (و) or Ya (ي). Finally, the second letter must be Sakeen letter.
If this condition is met, Madd Badal is used, and the result is to extend the letter to two vowels (Harakah) before the vowel. Extending lengthens the sound of the letter, making it twice as long as it is usually pronounced.
It should be noted that the use of Madd Badal is special for reading the Qur’an and Tajwid. It adds beauty and rhythm to reading, making it melodious and enjoyable. However, it is not used in ordinary conversation or everyday conversation.
