Islamic Studies: An Overview, Outline, and Benefits
Islam is the true religion, and one evidence of its rightness is its vastness. It covers everything with maximum depth despite holding its spirituality. Therefore, one finds many sciences and branches for studying Islam. Let’s discuss what the subjects in Islamic Studies are:
What are the Subjects in Islamic Studies:
Since Islam has been revealed in the form of two primary sources, the Qur’an and Hadith, most of the sciences and studies revolve around these two, including the reflections about Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him).
So the Subjects of Islamic Studies are classified into various subcategories:
Islamic Studies Categories:
Subjects Related to Qur’an:
What is Qur’an:
Qur’an is the last holy Book revealed to Mankind for their guidance from Allah in Arabic. It has been announced on the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) in 23 years through the Angel Jibreel (علیه السلام)۔
Recitation of Qur’an:
One needs to learn about the first ever subject, the Qur’an recitation. It is an essential subject in Islamic Studies and a starting point to reach the end. Every Muslim must learn how to read and recite the Qur’an. It’s a norm in every Muslim household that they teach their children how to read Qur’an in their childhood at a very early age.
Tajweed of Qur’an:
Since Qur’an is a sacred Book, it has come with its own set of rules, which makes it different and prominent from all other Arabic literature. Tajweed is a set of rules that needs to be considered during the recitation of the Qur’an. It is more similar to the rules of pronunciation but with much more.
Hifz Al-Qur’an:
Though Hifz (memorization) is not necessary for Islamic Studies, it’s a cherry on top. One who memorizes Qur’an can remember the Islamic Knowledge and essentials more than anyone else. Since the Qur’an is the primary source of Islam, memorizing Quran automatically makes the person know if he can understand the text.
Arabic Language:
Since Islam has been revealed in the Arabic Language, it is impossible to master Islamic studies without learning the Arabic Language. But the Arabic Language is a stand-alone subject with categories like Nahw, Surf, Balaghah, Adab, Poetry, etc.
To understand Islam, it is recommended to learn at least a portion of the Arabic Language.
Translation:
Though translation was not part of Islamic studies since Islam has reached the corners of the world and people from different backgrounds and ethnicities accepted the invitation of Islam, it was a need to translate Qur’an is every Language so anyone can benefit from the message of Allah and the non-Muslims can also explore the beauty of Qur’an on their own.
Also, not everyone can learn the Arabic Language to an advanced level, so understanding the translation of some parts helps laypeople a lot in their prayers and spirituality. Therefore, it became part of Islamic Studies.

What is Hadith?
Hadith is the term used for the words, actions, and affairs of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Hadith is the record of Prophet Muhammad’s (ﷺ) daily life. It contains everything said by the Prophet, every action performed by the Prophet, every answer to any question given by the Prophet, every reaction to any incident by Him, or any incident that took place in His life.
Usool al-Hadith:
Sciences of Hadith is the subject where a student learns about how to verify the authenticity of any Hadith, whether it is rightly attributed to the Prophet ﷺ or not.

It covers His birth, upbringing, pre, and post-Prophethood era, His journey, married life, children, friends, family, migration, calamities, wars, etc. All are in chronological order.
Along with these major categories, some subjects are the result of both types, like Aqeedah (Belief).
Aqidah:
It is the subject where we study what Islam asks us to believe in and what is necessary to remain Muslim and believer, what is the borderline between believing and nonbelieving, Tawheed and shirk, Eemaan and kufr, sunnah and Bid’ah (innovation). What are the pillars of Eemaan and Islam etc.?
Fiqh:
Fiqh is the most crucial part of Islamic Studies, but again it is the result of both categories; it is a study of rules and regulations a Muslim must act upon in his daily life affairs, in prayers, trading, marriage, divorce, eating, bathing, and how to deal with every situation in life, what is the code of conduct, what is prohibited and what is permitted. It deals with all.
Fiqh has different stages, from basic to advance. To some point, one must learn about Usool al-Fiqh to understand the excessive Fiqh and the philosophy of deriving Islamic rulings.
History:
History is a vital part to learn about; history is the record of Islam’s success and how Muslims ruled the world with utmost peace.
And just how beautiful the world became after implementing Islamic teachings, and why a believer shouldn’t underestimate the Islamic teachings as Islam has proved before why it is the right religion.
History shows the different perspectives on how beautifully Islamic civilization formed and evolved.
Zuhd:
Zuhd can be another subject for Islamic Studies, which deals with spirituality, pureness of heart, and internal development. Zuhd is about healing the heart and inner side of the person.
Adab:
Adab is taught separately by many institutes, which deals with the mannerism of daily affairs and how to behave in what should be Islamic Manners while attending a wedding, funeral, etc.
