Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Rajioon
Inna lillahi Wa Inna ilayhi raji’un (Arabic: إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ, ʾinnā li-llāhi wa-ʾinna ʾilayhi rājiʿūna), also known as Istirja (Arabic: ٱسْتِرْجَاع, ʾIstirjāʿ), is narrated that the light of Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) one night shut off, at that moment, Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) said “Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Rajioon”, so, one of his companions asked saying “Oh, Messenger of Allah, is it a calamity?”. The prophet replied, “Yes, everything befalls upon a Muslim is calamity”.
“innalillahiwainnailaihirojiun” is a dua mentioned in the Quran in the context of being afflicted by calamities.

قال الله تعالى( وَبَشِّرِ الصَّابِرِينَ الَّذِينَ إِذَا أَصَابَتْهُمْ مُصِيبَةٌ قَالُوا إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ أُولَئِكَ عَلَيْهِمْ صَلَوَاتٌ مِنْ رَبِّهِمْ وَرَحْمَةٌ وَأُولَئِكَ هُمُ الْمُهْتَدُونَ) [البقرة: 155- 157]
The Quran verse in which the phrase “Inna lillahi Wa Inna ilayhi raji’un” is mentioned in verse number 156 of Surat No. 2, Al-Bakarah.
It was the emphasis given by Allah – the All-Mighty – that difficulties of various kinds must occur to Muslims. Moreover, the Aya describes how to face these difficulties and how Allah compensates us if we feel and say “Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Rajioon.
For easy or serious difficulties one can say “Innalillahiwainnailaihirojiun”
- Allah mentioned “Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Rajioon” in the context of death, lack of provisions, fear, hunger.
- Prophet Mohammed said, “Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Rajioon” in the context of shutting off of his light, as well as death.
Companion Umar bin al-Khattab said “Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Rajioon” in the context of tearing off his shoes.
As understood from traditions, one should say “Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Rajioon” at any difficulties he faces whatever the level of seriousness they were. Starting from shutting off the light and cutting of shoes till losing one of the children by death.
Inna lillahi Wa Inna ilayhi raji’un meaning:
basically, this great word consists of two phrases:
- “Inna lillahi“ means: we belong to Allah, or we are some of His property.
- “wa Inna ilayhi raji’un“ which means: and to Him we shall return
Here is the meaning of every single word:
Inna: meaning Truly, Indeed, surely, verily ‘we’.
Lillahi: We belong to Allah.
Wa Inna: Wa means ‘and’; Inna means ‘indeed, we’
Ilayhi: means ‘towards Him’.
Rajioon: means ‘Return’.

- the meaning of Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Rajioon makes it easy for us to accept calamities, once we know that All this life come to an end.
- “innalillahiwainnailaihirojiun” meaning give us the feeling that Allah, the Wise, the Merciful, has the right to do whatever He wants in His universe.
Can one say “Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Rajioon” after one year or more from the calamity?
In our life, there are some times that were too difficult that if we remember them, even after tens of years, we would feel sorrow and grief.
Islam always keeps our feelings enhanced, that is because we are the servants of Allah.

By considering the verses of the Quran and the hadith of the Prophet, one can understand the great rewards for “Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Rajioon” either in this life or the Hereafter.
- Near compensation for what one has lost, and even better of it.
- Different kinds of good from Allah would be bestowed upon you.
- The mercy of Allah would come to support you.
- You would be given guidance and shown how to deal with the problem.
A female companion of Prophet Mohammed (PBUH), called Um Salamah, had her husband died, who was a great man and great companion.
She had been taught to say “Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Rajioon” upon calamity time and informed that if one say it, he would take better than what he lost.
She asked herself, after saying “Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Rajioon”, who is better than my husband, but she wait for Allah’s recompense.
Asking for marriage by Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) himself was the compensation that Allah gave her.
inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un allahumma jurni fi musibati wakhlofni kairn minha
That is the full dua that Umm Salamah was taught to say.
“إنَّا لله وإنَّا إليه راجعونَ، اللهُمَّ أْجُرْني في مُصِيبتِي، وأَخْلِفْ لي خيرًا منها”
Condition to take the reward of “Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Rajioon”
The great meaning of “Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Rajioon” should be in conformity with what one feels. One should feel the meaning of “Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Rajioon” and adhere to it, not to be dissatisfied with Allah’s Decree. One should not say “Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Rajioon” only by the tongue.
Can one feel sorrow when saying “Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Rajioon?
Feelings with their different kinds: happiness, sorrow, pride, honor, etc. are part of us as human beings. Islam does not come to prevent our nature but to control it for our favor.
Upon the death of the Prophet’s child, and as a human being, his eyes started to shed tears, but he still had not felt or said except what Allah is pleased with, “Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Rajioon”.
